ROGERS PARK — A Sheridan Road gas station is being rebuilt and will include a Dunkin’ Donuts.

The Shell gas station at 7138 N. Sheridan Road wants the city’s permission to rebuild. Plans call for the existing structure, including the Subway building, to be demolished to make way for a single building that will include the Dunkin’ Donuts.

Renderings show a second retail space will be available in the building.

The gas station at Sheridan Road and Touhy Avenue had its zoning changed to residential by former Ald. Joe Moore, said Ald. Maria Hadden (49th). The facility’s owners now need a zoning change to accommodate their plans, a measure Hadden supports.

“This has been a good business operating in the 49th Ward for some years,” Hadden said at the city’s Zoning Committee meeting Tuesday. “My predecessor down-zoned it for whatever reason. Now, they’re trying to make these renovations.”

The rezoning was approved by the Zoning Committee, but the plans still need the approval of the city’s Plan Commission, the Zoning Board of Appeals and City Council before work can begin, said Torrence Gardner, director of economic development for the 49th Ward.

The gas station sits across the street from Loyola Beach and Loyola Park.
