NORTH LAWNDALE — An 8-year-old boy was shot Thursday night just across the street from an elementary school in the K-Town neighborhood on the West Side.

At about 6 p.m., the boy was standing on a sidewalk at the 1800 block of South Kildare Avenue near Roswell Mason Elementary School when someone fired shots, police said.

The boy was shot in his knee and taken to Mount Sinai Hospital by his family. His condition was not available, but he was listed as “stable,” police said.

There were other people nearby when the shooting happened, police said, and it appears the child was not the intended target.

No one has been arrested in relation to the shooting. Detectives are investigating.

Violence interrupters with Firehouse Community Arts Center are working with the boy’s family and others in the area to prevent retaliation against the shooting. The organization’s violence prevention initiative, Project Presence, will meet weekly at 5 p.m. Tuesdays at Franklin Park to work with residents to reduce gun violence in K-Town.
