WRIGLEYVILLE — Guthries Tavern, which closed last year due to the pandemic, is coming back under new ownership.

The beloved board game bar, 1300 W. Addison St., updated its website Wednesday with the announcement.

“Guthries is now under new ownership. Stay tuned…” a banner at the top of the website reads. At the bottom of the page is the message: “Stay tuned for the reopening of Guthrie’s Tavern!”

Additional details, including who the bar’s new owners are and when doors would reopen, were not immediately available.

Guthries first opened near Wrigleyville in 1986. Fans of the bar were devastated last July when Guthries announced it would be closing its doors for good due to the financial impact of the coronavirus pandemic.

Their move to shut down the bar came hours after Mayor Lori Lightfoot announced restrictions on indoor service for bars and restaurants because of rising coronavirus infections.

“It is with a heavy heart that we announce the closing of Guthrie’s Tavern,” the bar said in an Instagram post at the time. “With the new restrictions set today for bars and the ongoing COVID restrictions, we don’t see a way we can survive.”

When it reopens, the bar could be celebrating its 35th year in the neighborhood.
