CHATHAM — Brown Sugar Bakery owner Stephanie Hart got the shock of a lifetime when Vice President Kamala Harris stopped by her popular bakery Tuesday in Chatham.
Harris, who was in town to promote COVID-19 vaccine equity, popped by the bakery, 328 E. 75th St., with Lt. Gov. Juliana Stratton and Cook County State’s Attorney Kim Foxx. Staff presented Harris with several trays of cupcakes to take back to the nation’s capital.
Hart told ABC7 Harris was looking for a small business to support, and her bakery was on the list of suggestions. Watch the video here.
“She could have gone to a million other places, but she came here, and I’m grateful for that,” bakery worker Tyera Adugba told ABC7.
Hart opened Brown Sugar Bakery at 328 E. 75th St. in 2004.
Brown Sugar Bakery is active in helping its community. The bakery will accept donations of men and women’s clothing, shoes, accessories and hygiene products for Rhianna’s Treasured Gifts, a nonprofit supporting survivors of intimate partner violence, 3-6 p.m. April 24.
