AVONDALE — Thousands of packages have been stolen or delayed in Chicago, but one theft caught on camera over the weekend was rather nutty.

A bold squirrel (yes, a squirrel!) was caught on cellphone video stealing an Amazon package off of someone’s front porch in Avondale Sunday evening.

Noemi Gutierrez and her family were sitting on their porch at Central Park Avenue and Roscoe Street Sunday evening enjoying the nice weather when an Amazon delivery person dropped off a package at their neighbor’s across the street. Just a few minutes later, they watched the squirrel make off with the package in spectacular fashion.

The video, taken by Gutierrez’s mom, shows the critter snatching the package from the stoop before scurrying up the building and disappearing.

“We laughed and couldn’t believe it,” Gutierrez said.

Gutierrez said she suspects it’s the same squirrel who ate her tortillas off their porch earlier this month. Block Club could not verify this information. The squirrel could not be reached for comment.

“I just want to know how many packages are in the roof or between the crack,” Gutierrez said.
