GAGE PARK — The Gage Park Latinx Council will give away 12,000 pounds of food to families in need throughout February.

The community group will distribute food at its cultural center, 2711 W. 51st St. The group is giving out 30-pound boxes of produce, milk, cheese and meals on a first come, first served basis.

The first scheduled food giveaway starts 10 am Thursday. Other distribution events will take place 10 a.m. Feb. 12, Feb.18 and Feb. 25.

People are asked to wear a mask, adhere to social distancing and bring a transportable cart.

Founded in 2018, the council created youth and community programs to serve the Gage Park community.  Since March, the organizers have pivoted to provide resources to the hard-hit Southwest Side, including mutual aid support for undocumented families.

In September, the Gage Park Latinx Council moved its weekly pop-up food distribution program Fresh Food Within Reach to its newly opened cultural center.
