MARQUETTE PARK — The mother of a baby boy reported missing for several hours Monday now is facing charges, as Chicago Police say she falsely claimed the infant was inside a car that was stolen from Marquette Park.
Sade Owens, 30, whose address is listed in Uptown, has been charged with one felony count of filing a false police report, police officials said in a statement Tuesday night.
Owens claimed she’d left her 7-month old son, Jaylen, inside her car while she went inside a convenience store in the 2700 block of West 71st Street around 12:45 p.m. Monday, police said. When she came out, the car and Jaylen were gone.
Police located the car at the 1400 block of South Keeler Avenue about two hours later, but Jaylen wasn’t inside, prompting police and federal authorities to send public alerts to help find him.
Police said around 8:30 p.m. Monday officers had located Jaylen safely but provided no further details.
Now police say Jaylen had been in the care of a babysitter all along, never was in the car with Owens and never was in any danger.
Police arrested Owens without incident late Monday night. She is due to appear in Cook County bond court Wednesday.
