WEST LOOP — The West Loop already has Au Cheval, one of the city’s top-rated burger spots. Now its owners are hoping to open a Small Cheval less than a mile away.

The owners, Hogsalt, are asking for a zoning change to make way for a Small Cheval outpost at 1352 W. Lake St., according to a zoning application filed last week.

Hogsalt wants to convert an existing 1-story, 2,085-square-foot building into a restaurant and use an additional 3,800 square feet for an outdoor patio.

The group’s flagship, Au Cheval, is at 800 W. Randolph St. It features a cheeseburger that ranks among the best burgers in the nation, but the wait times are notoriously long.

Hogsalt current has two Small Chevals: At 1732 N. Milwaukee Ave. in Wicker Park and at 1345 N. Wells St. in Old Town.

Small Cheval it touted as “a casual, fast-paced joint serving a stripped-down menu of essentials.” The menu offers a burger for $8.95 and a cheeseburger for $9.95. Bacon is an extra $2. “Golden fries” are $2.95.

Crain’s was the first to report on the proposed new location.

A representative with Hogsalt declined to comment on the timeline of the project.
