WEST GARFIELD PARK — A West Side organization is hosting a “Fresh to School” giveaway in West Garfield Park this weekend.

Kids and their families can get free backpacks, school supplies, toiletries and groceries Sunday from 1-4 p.m. at New Mount Pilgrim Missionary Baptist Church’s parking lot, 4281 W. Washington Blvd.

The giveaway is open to families living in Humboldt Park, Garfield Park, Austin, Homan Square, Avondale, North Lawndale and Douglas Park.

Hot meals will also be provided courtesy of Bro-N-Laws Bar-B-Q at 3820 W. Chicago Ave. and FH Jerk in East Garfield Park.

There also will be performances by a guitarist and local dancers, as well as a live artist painting. Locally-made art prints will be available for kids. Six students will receive $100 Instacart gift cards.

The event is being organized by Earth’s Remedies, a nonprofit run by siblings Charles Pickett and Mercedes Pickett. The pair raised more than $40,000 for West Side businesses hit hard by looting and the coronavirus pandemic.

The siblings partnered with several West Side organizations for the giveaway, including Garfield Park Community Council and Austin Coming Together.

Earth’s Remedies organized a similar event Aug. 22.
