CHICAGO — The city will get hit with heavy winds and rain Tuesday afternoon due to tropical storm Cristobal.

The storm has lashed the South for days — and Tuesday, the remnants of it will bring severe weather to Chicago and the rest of the Great Lakes area, according to the National Weather Service.

Wind gusts are expected to hover around 45 mph around Chicago, though there’s a chance they could even get as high as 50 mph, according to the National Weather Service. The city is also expected to see “brief but torrential downpours,” with some flooding possible.

The National Weather Service has issued a wind advisory and beach hazard statement and they’re in effect until 10 p.m. The agency warned high winds Tuesday could send loose objects blowing around and could make for hazardous driving for large vehicles.

Tree damage and power outages will be likely, according to the agency, and waves on Lake Michigan could get as high as 7 feet. Strong rip currents are expected to form, and people are being advised to stay out of the water and to not venture near near the shoreline.

The city will have a chance for showers and thunderstorms early in the day, according to the National Weather Service, but the rain is expected to start about noon and last the rest of the day.

It could rain as much as a half-inch, according to the agency. The day will mostly be breezy with 10-15 mph winds, though those will increase to 25 mph in the afternoon and gusts could get as high as 45 mph.

It will be a warm day, though, with a high temperature of 83 degrees.

The rain could continue into early Wednesday, when there’s a chance for showers and thunderstorms before 4 a.m., according to the National Weather Service.

The wind will keep up, too, with wind gusts of 40 mph possible overnight.

Wednesday could see more rain, but it will be mostly sunny with a high temperature near 80 degrees. It’ll continue to be windy with 15-20 mph winds and gusts up to 30 mph.
