CHICAGO — Al’s Beef in River North is moving after 35 years on Ontario Street — but it’s only going a block away.

The famed Italian beef spot opened in 1985 at 169 W. Ontario St. and has stayed there since. But the owners were unable to extend their lease with a new landlord, requiring them to move.

The last day at the Ontario Street location will be Sunday, according to a press release.

After that, owners Ahmad, AJ and Asad Haj will move the business one block south to 548 N. Wells St.

You won’t be able to eat there for a while, though: Construction work needs to be done and that isn’t scheduled to begin until July. They hope to reopen in the fall.

The new location won’t have a drive-thru, though owners plans to have a late-night walkup window.

“There are hundreds of regular customers known by name and
will be missed beyond any words can describe as each and every one of them are looked at as family,” the restaurant said in a press release.
