Fire Destroys Vincennes Food Mart In Auburn Gresham

Two firefighters suffered minor injuries, fire officials said. The building will need to be demolished.

AUBURN GRESHAM — A fire broke out Tuesday morning in an Auburn Gresham food market, with two firefighters suffering minor injuries.

Just before 6 a.m., the three-alarm blaze swept through the Vincennes Food Mart, 400 W 79th St. A grocery store on the first floor and apartments above it were destroyed, with the fire spreading to a neighboring building.

All residents were safely evacuated, but the building was destroyed and residents have been displaced.

At 8:30 a.m., firefighters were still on scene.

The fire started in the first floor of the building. The cause has yet to be determined.

Fire officials said the building will need to be demolished.

CTA buses along the 79th Street corridor have been rerouted until further notice.
