GRAND CROSSING — Free COVID-19 testing and masks will be available starting at 10 p.m. Friday in a Grand Crossing parking lot in the shadow of the Skyway.
The testing and mask distribution will be done 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Friday in the parking lot across from 7522 S. Greenwood Ave. Social distancing will be implemented, walk-ups and drive-ups are allowed. Recipients will be asked to step out of their car for testing.
Testing is optional. People can only ask for a mask. No insurance, sign-up or prior registration is required. Testing will be administered by healthcare professionals.
The 2,000 masks being handed out were donated by 8th ward Ald. Michelle Harris and the New Life Covenant Church Southeast.
Shammrie Brown, senior director of outreach and community development at the New Life Covenant, said Howard Brown Health sought to locate a testing site in the neighborhood.
“Howard Brown was interested in bringing in mobile testing to the community, and it’s not our first partnership where they offer an array of health alternatives despite income base,” Shammrie Brown said.
This mobile testing and free maks distribution is being coordinated by the New Life Covenant Church Southeast, Senior Pastor John F. Hannah, and Ald. Harris.
“We see that COVID has impacted the Black community and our residents fall in that low to moderate-income, which means it can be difficult to have access to this testing, and we wanted to bring these resources,” said Brown.
