CHICAGO — Mayor Lori Lightfoot told President Donald Trump to liberate more tests and personal protective equipment after he went online to demand some states relax their stay at home orders.

In three tweets Friday morning, Trump demanded Minnesota, Michigan and Virginia be “liberated.” Trump was referencing the stay home orders these states currently have in place to slow the spread of the coronavirus.

Trump’s tweet came a day after he walked back his earlier incorrect assertion that he has total authority to reopen states.

Later Friday, Lightfoot retweeted Trump’s Michigan tweet with her own demand: “LIBERATE SOME TESTS AND PPE.”

The Trump administration has been repeatedly criticised by the mayor and Gov. JB Pritzker for its inability to provide adequate testing and protective equipment to states.

Governors and health officials say flawed tests, scarce supplies and limited access to screening have hurt the U.S.’s ability to monitor the spread of COVID-19, according to the New York Times.

Earlier this week, Pritzker called the worldwide chase for personal protective equipment “the Wild West” thanks to a lack of federal coordination.
