WE’RE HIRING: Senior Editor At Block Club Chicago

Want to work for Block Club? We need you!

CHICAGO — Block Club Chicago is hiring a Senior News Editor with a passion for community journalism to help with breaking news, enterprise reporting and the expansion of our coverage in Chicago’s neighborhoods.

We’re looking for an editor who understands what Chicagoans care about, from the big (a teacher’s strike) to the “small” (a beloved neighborhood business closing). This person must be quick at spotting stories of importance to Block Club’s audience and working with reporters to ensure stories are accurate, interesting and filed in a timely fashion.

The Senior Editor would supervise a group of reporters and be willing to jump into action in breaking news situations. For this specific role, you’ll be expected to work a midday shift, from 11-7 or noon-8 p.m.

The perfect candidate for this position can assign, edit and even write breaking news stories speedily and with a sharp eye for accuracy and fairness.

Applicants must be comfortable supervising a group of reporters and freelancers, line editing, helping reporters find sources and make their stories better and working with Block Club’s leadership team to ensure we’re providing interesting, relevant and impactful coverage of Chicago’s neighborhoods.

Block Club Chicago is committed to providing coverage that reflects the communities we cover. We believe a diverse newsroom is essential to achieving that goal.

We strongly encourage people of color, women, LGBTQ people and those who are members of other marginalized communities to apply.

About Us

Block Club Chicago is a nonprofit news organization dedicated to delivering reliable, nonpartisan and essential coverage of Chicago’s diverse neighborhoods.

Block Club Chicago was created by former DNAinfo Chicago editors following the shutdown of DNAinfo and Gothamist in November of 2017. After hearing from people all over the city about how much they missed our truly local coverage, we knew we had to get back to work.

Thanks to more than 3,000 Kickstarter backers and generous support from Civil, we were able to recruit a dedicated team of reporters ready to hit the streets. Our focus remains on telling stories that matter in the neighborhoods, and growing our coverage sustainably through reader and donor support.
