LAKEVIEW — Neighborhood institution and popular around-the-clock hangout spot Pick Me Up Cafe is leaving its longtime Wrigleyville location and moving to Uptown.
Opened in 1997, Pick Me Up Cafe helped popularize vegan and vegetarian-focused food in Chicago. The colorful diner at 3408 N. Clark St. has since become a local favorite, offering a friendly and (relatively) quiet hang-out space in the heart of Wrigleyville.
Pick Me Up Cafe will leave its longtime Lakeview location at the end of March, when it will depart for a new home about 14 blocks north on Clark Street. The restaurant will open in early April at 4882 N. Clark St. in Uptown.
In a Facebook post announcing the move, Pick Me Up management paid homage to the “community of misfits” that became the business’ “de facto family.” With the massive changes that have come to Wrigleyville in recent years, the move would allow Pick Me Up Cafe to be in a location more suited to the business.
The CTA is also doing major construction near the cafe on a towering “flyover” bypass which will carry Brown Line trains over Red and Purple line tracks north of the Belmont “L” station.
“…We simply want to go to where things feel properly weird again and we feel like this new space is a great opportunity to become a part of a new community while keeping the soul of [Pick Me Up Cafe] alive for years to come,” the restaurant’s management wrote in a Facebook post.
The restaurant’s last day in its current location will be March 22, the business said on Facebook.
Pick Me Up Cafe serves breakfast, lunch and dinner and is open late-night. With a unique and retro decor, the cafe has a wide-ranging menu that includes vegan takes on diner food, including french toast and eggs benedict.
Patrons of Pick Me Up Cafe took to Facebook Monday to thank the restaurant for its contributions to the neighborhood.
“The Wrigleyville of my teenage years is no more but I’m thankful it’s just a move,” one commenter wrote. “What’s a little jaunt down Clark for a Garlicious Breast,” a popular sandwich at the restaurant.
The restaurant’s new location, 4882 N. Clark St., previously housed restaurants Ceres’ Table and Monticchio. The location sits on the border of Uptown and Andersonville, and is near the new luxury apartment building at Ainslie and Clark. Pick Me Up will also neighbor Lincoln Towing, the infamous tow company that was recently allowed to stay in business after a legal battle with state regulators.
Pick Me Up Cafe is seeking to serve liquor at the new location, according to Uptown Update. An announcement about a grand opening will be made at a later date, the business said on Facebook.
