EDGEWATER — The newest tenant in Edgewater’s Bryn Mawr Historic District is presidential candidate Mike Bloomberg’s campaign office.
Bloomberg, the former mayor of New York City and current Democratic presidential hopeful, opened a field office at 1130 W. Bryn Mawr Ave., his campaign announced. It is one of five new field offices opened by the campaign throughout the state, including one at 712 E. 87th St. in Chatham.
The Edgewater office was opened Tuesday with help from John W. Rogers Jr., chairman and co-CEO of Chicago-based Ariel Investments. Rogers, a friend of former President Barack Obama, originally endorsed Sen. Kamala Harris but switched to Bloomberg after the senator dropped out of the race.
Bloomberg, a billionaire media mogul, entered the Democratic presidential primary race in November. Since then, he has spent over $300 million in campaign advertising and has announced plans to double his advertising budget, according to the Associated Press.
Though he is not campaigning in early primary states like Iowa or New Hampshire, Bloomberg has built up a sizable campaign operations in Democractic battleground states like California and New York. In Illinois, Bloomberg has recently added more than 80 staff members and six offices, according to the campaign.
Aside from the two new field offices and a state headquarters office in Chicago, Bloomberg has opened offices in Springfield, Belleville and Rock Island.
Bloomberg made a campaign stop in Chicago last month, speaking to a crowd of about 200 at Olive-Harvey College in Pullman, according to the Chicago Tribune.
Edgewater has been a popular destination for Democratic presidential hopefuls. In late November, Sen. Elizabeth Warren held a town hall at the Broadway Armory.
