WEST LOOP — A woman was seriously injured after a man beat her with a baseball bat on a West Loop street early Wednesday, Chicago Police said.

At about 4:08 a.m., police offers responded to a call of a battery in progress in the 900 block of West Monroe Street, according to Kellie Bartoli, a Chicago Police spokeswoman. Police initially said the attack took place around the corner in the 0-100 block of South Halsted Street.

Officers arrived on the scene and found a 34-year-old woman with head injuries, Bartoli said. Witnesses told police they saw a man striking the woman with a baseball bat several times in the head and face, Bartoli said.

The woman was taken to Northwestern Hospital in serious condition, Bartoli said.

The man, whose age has not been released, was taken into custody and charges are pending. He told officers the two were arguing before the attack, Bartoli said.

It’s unclear whether the woman knew the man, Bartoli said.
