AVONDALE — Dark Matter’s Avondale coffee shop is set to open this week.
The new spot at 2901 W. Belmont Ave. is slated to open Thursday, according to Dark Matter’s website.
Company spokesman Kyle Hodges didn’t respond to a request for comment Monday.
Hodges told Block Club in August that chocolate would be the focus on the new coffee shop, specifically Mexico City-based La Rifa Chocolatería.
Decor-wise, the owner drew inspiration from La Rifa and Mexico City as a whole, Hodges previously said.
The coffee shop is named after the roadside inns where travelers took shelter on trade routes in the Middle East and parts of North Africa and Central Asia: Caravanserais.
Dark Matter was founded by Indianapolis native Jesse Diaz. According to Crain’s, Diaz answered a Craigslist ad for a job at Ukrainian Village’s Star Lounge in 2007 and then, three months later, the owners told the staff they wanted to sell, which is when Diaz bought the shop (using $2,000 he borrowed from a childhood friend) and started building Dark Matter.
The Avondale spot is Dark Matter’s eighth coffee shop in Chicago.
