BRIGHTEN PARK — A seven-year-old girl was watching TV early Christmas morning when she was critically wounded in Brighton Park, police said.’
At 1:37 a.m. Wednesday, the child was in the living room during a family gathering in the 3700 block of South Washtenaw Avenue when someone from the sidewalk opened fire, police said.
The girl was hit in the abdomen and taken to Stroger Hospital in critical condition, police said.
A 38-year-old man, who was the intended target, was also shot in the leg and walked to St. Anthony’s before being transferred to Mt. Sinai where his condition has stabilized, police said.
It’s unclear whether he was inside the home during the shooting, police said.
On Wednesday morning, Mayor Lori Lightfoot said on Twitter the Chicago Police Department would do “everything possible” to bring the shooter to justice.
“As we gather for the holiday, we renew our commitment to protect our children from harm,” she said.
No one is in custody and police are investigating.
