POLISH TRIANGLE — We’re sorry, Checkers fans.

You need to wait just a little bit longer before sinking your teeth into those famous seasoned fries.

Checkers has moved its intended Dec. 27 opening at the Wicker Park/West Town border back to Dec. 30, spokesperson Jennifer Hoch said Thursday.

The company had initially anticipated a July 16 opening, leading to months of anticipation by fans.

“The opening has been delayed due to various factors and the group is now putting the final touches for the grand opening,” Hoch said last week, after announcing the Dec. 27 open date.

The restaurant is attached to, and will share an address with, Popeyes Louisiana Kitchen at 1555 W. Division St.

Checkers is known for its hamburgers, wings and “famously seasoned” French fries, while Popeyes offers their famous chicken sandwich, Cajun-style fried chicken, fish and red beans and rice, among other offerings.

The pair of chain restaurants are on the southeast corner of Division Street and Ashland Avenues, across from the Polish Triangle, sandwiched between Wicker Park and West Town.

While Checkers is known for its double drive-thrus, the Wicker Park location will be walk-in only.

Other fast food options in the immediate area include a Burger King, which opened in 2015 on the opposite side of the Polish Triangle, at 1215 N. Milwaukee Ave., and a Wendy’s at 1623 W. Division St., just a half block west of the Division and Ashland intersection.

The pair of chains are next to the temporarily shuttered evilOlive nightclub.
