BACK OF THE YARDS — Police are investigating whether a driver was under the influence when he ran a red light and injured multiple people in a car crash Thursday night in Back of the Yards.
At 8:30 p.m., a 23-year-old man was driving his GMC Denali north on Damen Avenue when he ran a red light and hit a 2003 Honda Odyssey headed east in the 2000 block of West 51st Street, said Kelli Bartoli, a spokeswoman for the Chicago Police Department.
The Odyssey then hit a 2013 Chevrolet Malibu. The Odyssey driver, a 48-year-old man, was taken to the University of Chicago Hospital in serious condition. He was cited for driving with no insurance, Bartoli said.
The driver of the Malibu, a 42-year-old man, was taken to Holy Cross Hospital and listed in serious condition, Bartoli said.
The Denali driver was taken to the University of Chicago in critical condition. His passenger, whose age was unknown, was taken to Holy Cross in serious condition, Bartoli said.
A DUI investigation is underway for the 23-year-old driver of the Denali, Bartoli said.
