CHICAGO — My Block, My Hood, My City has started decorating King Drive for the holiday season.
Volunteers from the organization, which has collected donations so it can decorate King Drive, put up lights, garland and more on 400 poles and 250 homes over the weekend.
Gov. JB Pritzker turned out for one of the decorating events Sunday and praised the volunteers.
The group hopes to decorate 8 miles of King Drive on the South Side before Christmas.
The program, called Be a Part of the Light, started last year. Jahmal Cole, the founder of My Block, My Hood, My City, said he wanted the road to sparkle like Downtown’s Mag Mile.
Cole collects donations of lights and holiday decorations and he, along with volunteers, then put them up at homes and light poles along King Drive. Cole also gives a $25 subsidy to King Drive residents who request he decorate their home to help with their lighting bills.
My Block, My Hood, My City will need more volunteers — and donations — for decorating events this Sunday, Dec. 8, Saturday Dec. 14. and Sunday Dec. 15. Details are available online.
