DOWNTOWN — Strong winds Wednesday shut down the famed Christkindlmarket in Downtown’s Daley Plaza.

The market, a Chicago tradition based on German holiday markets, posted on its website that it was closed “due to high winds,” though it could reopen at 4 p.m. Updates will be available online.

Wednesday has been a particularly windy day for Chicago, and meteorologists have warned wind gusts could get as high as 60 mph. Thursday, when families across the country will celebrate Thanksgiving, is expected to be milder.

The market opened last week. Attendees are able to walk around the plaza, picking up ornaments, lights, gifts and snacks and drinks — including mulled wine and hot cocoa served in famous boot mugs.

Christkindlmarket will return Thursday, when it will be open 11 a.m.-4 p.m. for the holiday.

Christkindlmarket also has a smaller location at 3637 N. Clark St. in Wrigleyville. That market is “assessing weather conditions” and will post updates about if it will open, according to a Twitter post.
