CHATHAM — In need of a little help with Thanksgiving dinner? Interested in breaking bread with friends old and new? You’re in luck: The days leading up to Turkey Day are jam-packed with events to keep you, your belly and your spirit full.
The Black McDonald’s Operators Association will host its 19th Annual Food For the Body And Spirit program this week at various locations around the city. Wednesday through Saturday, participating stores will give away 2,000 turkeys with all the trimmings.
Veterans will receive special courtesy when they arrive to claim their turkeys, and they’ll get a card allowing them to get a free cup of coffee every day through the end of the year. Dates and locations:
• Wednesday, 6560 S. Stony Island Ave.
• Thursday, 9560 S. Halsted Ave.
• Friday, 3200 W. Roosevelt Road
• Saturday, 3639 169th St. in Hammond, Ind.
Giveaways at all locations begin at 8 a.m.
The Powell Law Firm’s Thanksgiving Turkey Giveaway will be 5-8 p.m. Wednesday at the South Side YMCA, 6330 S. Stony Island Ave. It’s first come, first served until all the turkeys are gone.
Kids Off The Block’s 13th Annual Feed A Teen Thanksgiving Dinner is 1-5 p.m. Saturday at 11623 S. Michigan Ave. There will be music, entertainment and special prizes. Power 92 DJ Rodney “Hotrod” Washington is scheduled to appear.
Saturday is also the day of Blue Cross Blue Shield’s Community Care Fair at Christ Universal Temple, 11901 S. Ashland Ave. In addition to a free turkey or chicken giveaway, there will be free medical screenings and Blue Cross recruiters on site to take resumes for their new Morgan Park location coming in 2020. The fair kicks off at 11 a.m. and runs until 3 p.m.
New Life Covenant Church South East will host a giveaway of its own 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at Greater Grand Crossing Park, 7655 S. Ingelside Ave. In addition to turkeys, the church will give away winter coats, hot cocoa and hugs.
The Str8dropuncut podcast and Bronzeville boutique, LuvHandles, will host turkey giveaways on the South and West sides Sunday. The West side giveaway starts at noon at Lake St. and Central Ave., with the South Side event following at 2 p.m. at LuvHandles, 308 E. 47th St.
Think Outside Da Block’s 8th Annual Thanksgiving Extrav kicks off 4-8 p.m. Monday at Ogden Park, 6500 S. Racine Ave. Adults can get free turkeys (valid identification required), and kids can receive free haircuts, hairstyling and free manicures to get fresh for the holidays. There will be food, fun and two DJs spinning all the favorites.
New Creation BALM Ministries will host a giveaway at 6 p.m. Monday at its church, 12900 S. Halsted St.
Turkey Chop Gourmet Grill will host its 5th Annual Turkey Giveaway Nov. 27 at its restaurant, 3506 W. Chicago Ave. One thousand turkeys will be given away this year. Folks waiting in line will be treated to a “sweet” surprise from Chatham’s Brown Sugar Bakery.
