West Town Carpet Warehouse, Once Considered For Cloud Kitchens Site, Being Demolished

A plan to sell and develop the site into single family homes is "on hold," neighborhood leaders said.

WEST TOWN — After building code violations and two failed redevelopment proposals, an old carpet warehouse in West Town is being demolished.

The West Town Neighbors Association board sent out an email to neighbors on Friday alerting them to the demolition. It’s unclear what will happen next, neighborhood leaders said.

Located at 2041-2059 W. Race St., the building has sat empty since 2016, when American Carpet Distributors relocated to Park Ridge.

Guardian Capital Partners planned to build eight $1.3 million homes there, but that never transpired.

Last year, former Uber CEO Travis Kalanick sought the site as a home for a Cloud Kitchens, a commercial kitchen for up to 40 delivery-only restaurants.

It’s unclear what happened to those plans; in July of this year, Cloud Kitchens made a move on a North Center property. That, too, has stalled after the company failed to secure a needed zoning change last week.
