Boy, 11, Seriously Injured In Back Of The Yards Fire

The source of the fire appeared to be an open flame that ignited a mattress, according to the Chicago Fire Department.

BACK OF THE YARDS— An 11-year-old boy was seriously injured in a fire Tuesday evening in Back of the Yards.

At 5:30 p.m., the Chicago Fire Department responded to a call of a fire in the 5400 block of South Hermitage Avenue, said Larry Merritt, a spokesman for the Chicago Fire Department.

The source of the fire appeared to be an open flame that ignited a mattress, Merritt said.

The boy suffered burns to more than half of his body and was taken to Comer Children’s Hospital. He was listed in serious to critical condition, Merritt said.

No other information was immediately available.
