AVONDALE — A 5-year-old boy is seriously injured after he was hit by a car while crossing the street Wednesday evening, police said.

The incident happened around 4:45 p.m. in the 3200 block of North Elston Avenue, according to Chicago police spokesman Officer Steve Rusanov.

The boy was crossing Elston Avenue in the crosswalk when a driver of a four-door sedan, a 72-year-old man, struck the boy before coming to a stop, Rusanov said.

The boy was taken to Lurie Children’s Hospital with a head injury. He is listed in serious condition, according to Rusanov.

The driver was cited for failure to stop for a pedestrian in the crosswalk.

Rusanov said there were other people in the crosswalk at the time of the incident, including a woman and a 40-year-old man, but couldn’t immediately provide further information.
