CHICAGO — Friends are fundraising to cover the funeral of a woman killed during the mass shooting Saturday in Dunning.

The fundraiser will help Jakub Kuzmicki, whose mother, 53-year-old Jolanta Topolska, was killed. So far, it’s raised more than $10,300 in three days.

The shooting happened about 5:30 p.m. Saturday. Officers were called to a condo building in the 6700 block of West Irving Park Road and found four people shot to death, police said. A fifth victim — Topolska — had been shot and was hospitalized in critical condition, but she later died.

On Facebook, Kuzmicki wrote that a neighbor had gunned down four people and then shot his mother, who was hospitalized. With his mother’s condition worsening, Kuzmicki and his father had to make “the decision that this is not the way my mother would want to live,” he wrote.

Krysztof Marek, 66, has been charged with five counts of first-degree murder, police said.

“What was just a regular weekend turned into a nightmare for Jakub and his whole family,” Mateusz Strojek, the organizer of the fundraiser, wrote on GoFundMe. “Jakub’s mother was always there for him and helped him become the great and helpful person that he is today.

“His loss was sudden and he has not been prepared to tackle what is now coming his way.”

The money raised through the GoFundMe will help Kuzmicki “with all of the expenses of the funeral, school and everyday life,” Strojek wrote.
