HERMOSA — A driver of a dump truck on Pulaski Road in the Hermosa neighborhood blew a stop sign and struck and killed a man crossing at a crosswalk Monday afternoon, police said.

The crash happened at about 12:30 p.m. at Pulaski Road and Dickens Avenue. The man’s body remained in the street, covered by a sheet, for more than four hours as police investigated the crash, horrifying neighbors.

The death closed Pulaski Avenue from Palmer Street to McLean Avenue.

Police said the truck driver was cited for failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident, not yielding to a pedestrian in the crosswalk and not stopping at a stop sign.

“He’s human, too. Pick him up. Or call somebody,” neighbor Maritza Vazquez said, standing at the yellow police tape blocking Pulaski. “It’s not fair. He’s still there. That’s sad.”

Neighbors also mourned for the man and his family.

“There is a dead body at the end of our block. In the pedestrian crosswalk. The one I use to walk to and from work everyday. Shedding tears for this human covered in a white sheet at Pulaski and Dickens,” one neighbor Tweeted.

Said Vazquez: “That could be somebody’s brother, somebody’s son.”
