CHICAGO — Good Chicago house music can turn the most mundane commute into a soulful, life-affirming event.
The Voice alum Meagan McNeal proved this earlier this week when she gave CTA Green Line passengers an impromptu concert.
In a video posted to McNeal’s Instagram account that has since gone viral, the South Side mother of two performs DJ Dennis Ferrer’s “Hey Hey,” with her baby boy in a sling. As she dances around the car, musician Corey Wilkes plays the trumpet in the background.
“My great grandma, Big Ka(HUNA) used to drive buses for [The CTA],” McNeal wrote on Instagram. “I used to ride with her all the day long.”
McNeal was on Jennifer Hudson’s team during Season 13 of the The Voice, before being eliminated in the Battle Rounds. She’s been in the performing for more than a decade, opening for artists like Will-I-Am and Jon B.
“Sometimes, you just need to bring your own sunshine,” she continued in the post. “I’ve always wanted to sing on the ELevated trains.”
The Monday performance, a SoulEL” jam session, was part of a partnership between the CTA and the Floating Museum, an arts collective that has been popping up around the city all summer in an effort to bring art to the daily lives of Chicagoans. Read more about it here.
McNeal did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
