FULTON RIVER DISTRICT — A 29-year-old woman was shot in the back by a man on a bicycle midday Wednesday in the River Fulton District, police said.

Police believe the woman was targeted.

It happened at 11:50 a.m. as the woman was walking on the sidewalk with a crowd in the 200 block of North Milwaukee Avenue, police said.

As she walked north on Milwaukee with at least four other people, the gunman pulled up on his bike, picked the woman out in the crowd, and fired one shot from a handgun, said Howard Ludwig, a spokesman for the Chicago Police Department.

The woman was immediately rushed to Northwestern Memorial Hospital where she is expected to survive, Ludwig said.

Witnessed said the gunman was on a dark-colored mountain bike. He had a backpack, dark pants and t-shirt, a baseball cap and white shoes, Ludwig said.

No one is in custody and police are investigating.

This is a developing story.
