HYDE PARK — Fabiana’s Bakery will close its Hyde Park shop Aug. 30, owner Fabiana Carter confirmed in an Instagram post.
The bakery at 1658 E. 53rd St., which specializes in custom cakes, pies, pastries and Brazilian sweets, will only fulfill “custom orders” as it transitions to open in another South Side location, Carter said. That new location has not been announced yet.
“Unfortunately, it has become increasingly expensive to run our retail bakery in its Hyde Park location,” Carter said in the post.
Employees at the bakery confirmed the closure Tuesday.
Until the new location opens, customers can purchase Fabiana’s baked goods at Philz Coffee Shop that’s set to open Sept. 1 at 1425 E. 53rd St.
“I want to sincerely thank all of my loyal, wonderful customers for their patronage over the past years. I appreciate your support and hope that you will continue supporting us in our new endeavor,” Carter wrote in the post.
She went on to thank her employees for their “loyalty, love and support.”
“You are all family to me and I am greatly thankful for the opportunity to have worked with you all throughout these years,” she wrote. “I learnt a lot from you all and I will miss you all very much and wish you all the best in your future.”
At the bakery Tuesday, customer Sarah Nooter, who enjoys Fabiana’s chocolate mousse and flan the most, said she was “sorry” to hear the shop was closing.
Another customer who lives across the street said the bakery has been a refuge for her during hard times.
“Everybody knows Fabiana knows how to bake,” she said.
The owners of Fabiana’s Bakery opened bar Bibliophile in Hyde Park last year.
