SOUTH SHORE — Bystanders sprung to action to save a driver from a burning car after a hit-and-run crash early Sunday morning, police said.
Witnesses told police that at about 3:15 a.m., a car — possibly a dark-colored Chevrolet Impala — sideswiped a Hyundai on the 1900 block of East 79th Street.
After hitting a traffic pole, the front of the Hyundai caught fire. Witnesses then stepped in to rescue the 24-year-old man who was driving the car.
The driver of the Chevrolet fled south on Jeffery after the crash. No one is in custody, police said,
The victim was taken to the University of Chicago Hospital in critical condition. The Major Accident Investigation Unit is investigating the incident.
