New Shop & Save Grocery Store On 71st Street Is Hiring And Appears Close To Opening

With the announcement of Thursday's hiring fair at the South Shore Cultural Center, the neighborhood appears on its way to losing its "food desert" status.

SOUTH SHORE — The nearly six-year process of replacing the shuttered South Shore Dominick’s appears to be near its end, as Shop & Save will hold a recruitment event Thursday.

The event will be held 10 a.m.-2 p.m. at the South Shore Cultural Center, 7059 S. South Shore Drive. Available positions include cashiers, managers, cooks, stockers and maintenance crew members.

Developers previously set a fall timeframe for the store’s grand opening, but a Shop & Save representative said they did not have an exact opening date set as of Wednesday.

Shop & Save signed a lease on the building at 71st Street and Jeffery Boulevard in May 2017. That was more than three years after Dominick’s closed, leaving South Shore as a “food desert.”

The shopping center was the only one of 11 Dominick’s locations in Chicago that was not snapped up by Mariano’s, Whole Foods or another grocer when it closed in 2013.

Plans to open in 2018 were set back after a delay in the approval of $10 million in tax-increment financing funds.

Ald. Leslie Hairston’s (5th) office did not respond to multiple requests for comment.
