BACK OF THE YARDS — Police are investigating potential cases of animal abuse after discovering a dead dog and several dead roosters in Back of the Yards.

Just after 11:30 a.m. Wednesday, police arrived at the 5200 block of South Damen Avenue after getting a call of animal abuse, said Kellie Bartoli, a spokeswoman for the Chicago Police Department.

During a search of the area, police found a dead dog “wrapped in a tarp, with marks consistent with abuse and dogfighting,” Bartoli said.

Officers also reported a “foul smell” from a bag atop a garbage can that was filled with “several dead roosters with large talons, consistent with fighting chickens and roosters,” Bartoli said.

A city crew removed the animals and Area Central detectives are investigating, Bartoli said.

No one is in custody.
