West Loop Hotel Boom Spreads As Group Set To Pitch 20-Story Hotel This Week

If approved, the hotel would bring 200 more hotel rooms to the area near the Morgan 'L' stop.

WEST LOOP —  The Fulton Market hotel boom has another entrant: a proposed 20-story hotel just a block east of the Morgan ‘L’ stop.

Fitzgerald Associates Architects will unveil plans for a new hotel at 920 W. Lake St. at a community meeting at 6 p.m. Wednesday on the third floor at 656 W. Randolph St. The West Loop Community Organization and Ald. Walter Burnett Jr. (27th) will co-host the meeting.  

On Monday, a spokesman for Fitzgerald Associates and Architects declined to discuss details on the project ahead of the community meeting.

The West Loop-based architecture firm will team up with Skokie-based F&F Realty on the project, according to Carla Agostinelli, executive director of the West Loop Community Organization. The proposed hotel would be 244 feet tall, and include 200 rooms and 4,500 square feet of ground-floor retail, Agostinelli said.

Agostinelli declined to provide the name of the hotel operator but said it would serve a need in the area.

“Most of the proposals we have seen are boutique” and this option will be “more accessible,” Agostinelli said.

The property, located at the corner of Lake and Sangamon streets, currently houses a parking garage.

The booming West Loop has become a hotbed for hotel projects.

Most recently, architecture firm Hartshorne Plunkard received key approval from the city’s Department of Planning and Development for a 12-story hotel at 1043 W. Fulton Market and a six-story office building 1041 W. Fulton Market St.

The two-building plan calls for first-floor retail and 15 parking spaces.

In April, a team of investors unveiled plans to convert a dairy supply facility at 1234 W. Randolph St. into the Standard Hotel.

As part of that proposal, Chicago-based Marc Realty and New York-based DDG Partners plan to build a 23-story hotel with 289 hotel rooms, 4,500 square feet commercial space, a rooftop bar and a pool, according to a zoning application filed earlier this year. 

Other developers also have their sights set on on Fulton Market. Oak Brook-based Huizenga Capital Management aim to build a 12-story luxury hotel at 1025 W. Fulton Market, according to Crain’s. Chicago-based LG Development is also pitching a 187-room, 17-story hotel at 215 N. May St, according to the publication.

In the spring, the Hoxton opened its 182-room hotel. And the long-awaited Nobu Hotel is expected to open its 115-rooms hotel with a 10,000 square-foot signature Nobu restaurant on Randolph later this year.

The West Loop is also home to Ace Hotel and Soho House.
