LITTLE VILLAGE — Two people were injured after a car split in half after striking a utility pole in Little Village, police said.

At 10:32 p.m., an 18-year-old man driving a 2005 Subaru Legacy westbound in the 2500 block of West Cermak Road when he struck the post, said Howard Ludwig, a Chicago Police spokesman.

The driver told officers he was trying to avoid hitting an oncoming car and did not see the utility post, Ludwig said.

After the crash, the front half the car was on the sidewalk, and the back half of the car was on the street, Ludwig said.

Bystanders helped one of those injured out of the car, while the Chicago Fire Department removed the other, according to the Sun-Times.

The driver and an 18-year-old woman, a passenger in the car, were taken to Stroger Hospital. The driver suffered minor scrapes, while the passenger was listed in “serious condition” with injuries to the arm and chest, police said.

No citations have been issued, Ludwig said.
