JACKSON PARK HIGHLANDS — Residents of the Jackson Park Highlands neighborhood — a designated Chicago landmark — are preparing for their annual community garage sales July 27 and 28.

The sales will be held rain or shine on the 6700-7000 blocks of South Cregier, South Constance, South Bennett and South Euclid avenues from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Organizer Lisa Howard said all of the houses participating in the sale will be active Saturday, with fewer open Sunday.

Participation varies annually, but Howard said anywhere from 15 to 30 homes are expected to open up shop.

“You can go to one person’s home and find clothing and purses and accessories, then go somewhere else and find electronics and small appliances and books,” Howard said. “We support each other. If I don’t have what a person is looking for, then I will suggest they take a look at our neighbors’ homes.”

The garage sales have been a community staple for at least 40 years, with organizer Camille Billingslea leading the effort for the past 35, Howard said.

Once this edition wraps up, Billingslea will step down after six years of sharing the load with Howard, who will take the lead moving forward.
