GARFIELD PARK — West Side residents are joining together to make getting healthier a community affair. Each Saturday through Aug. 24, neighbors will meet at 10 a.m. at the Garfield Park Field House for the West Side Walk for Wellness.
The walk is a chance for people to meet and catch up with others in their community while also getting some fresh air and low-impact cardio.
Walkers will be able to get nutritious snacks and wellness tips from health professionals and medical students who are joining the walk from Rush, which sponsored the program along with the American Medical Association.
According to Helen Little, who participated in the walks last year, it is easier to invest in personal wellness when accompanied by friends, family and neighbors.
“My favorite part was really getting to know other people in the area, in the Lawndale area, the Garfield area,” Little said.
The program is also aimed at getting more people involved and encourages participants to bring their neighbors with them. Residents who bring along five additional walkers each Saturday have a chance to win a special prize, in addition to the free T-shirt and goodie bag that people receive when they register. Little says last year, she saw many people bring along their families to participate as well.
“It gives them something to look forward to every Saturday, and it’s like a family time,” Little said.
