NORTH CENTER — After raising thousands of dollars from two Kickstarter campaigns, Michelin-starred chef Iliana Regan’s Bunny Bakery has closed for a second time less than three months after it was resurrected, the chef announced.
Operating out of Kitsune Restaurant, 4229 N. Lincoln Ave., the bakery’s closure was announced in an Instagram post Thursday afternoon. Kitsune will also close next month, the post announced.
“Thank you for all of your love and support over the last couple years from visiting us to supporting our ramen kits, classes, kickstarter and everything else in between,” the post said.
The post also said Kitsune would remain open until July 13.
“Please come visit us before then, our team and food is just as good as it’s ever [been],” the post said. “We still have a lot going on, are re-prioritizing, and are here for you.”
Tim Lacey, Kitsune’s manager, confirmed the two businesses were closing for good but did not respond to additional questions regarding the reason for the closures.
In 2015, Regan’s first Kickstarter campaign to open the bakery and host a series of pop-ups raised $34,000 from 278 backers. She teamed at the time with businessman Phil Tadros, founder of Bow Truss Coffee, who later filed for bankruptcy protection, a case that was eventually dismissed before being completed.
Tadros was not involved in the new bakery.
Named Bunny, the microbakery, Regan’s former bakery opened to rave reviews at 2928 N. Broadway in Lakeview in 2016. It featured menu items like foie gras toast — freshly baked bread layered with jam and foie gras in the shape of an owl — as well as brioche donuts with a whiskey glaze and salmon poke.
But three months after opening, the business closed.
Citing a lack of “financial backing to pull us through the first few months of leveling out,” Regan put the micro bakery concept on ice.
Earlier this year Regan announced plans to open Milkweed with her wife in late summer, according to the Detroit Free Press.
