CHICAGO — A newly surfaced video shows a man not walking, not biking but driving on The 606.
The person who posted the video on Reddit, Blarft, said the incident happened in mid-May near where the trail crosses Milwaukee Avenue. Blarft, who frequents the trail, was walking on it when they spotted the driver. Blarft forgot about the incident, though, and didn’t post the video until Wednesday.
“‘Is that a car on The 606?'” Blarft thought after spotting the driver. “I kinda looked around to see if anyone else was seeing this s—. … I was gonna say something to him, but he was moving at a safe speed and clearly heading to the east exit.”
Ben Helphand, president of Friends of the Bloomingdale Trail, said the driver was on The 606 with permission and was switching out posters for the New Monuments art installation.
Blarft, who declined to provide a real name, couldn’t figure out how the driver managed to get his car onto the trail. The driver was calm, looked straight ahead and seemed “used to the odd looks he was getting,” Blarft said.
“I’ve never seen anything like that,” Blarft told Block Club Chicago. “You get the odd 50cc motorbike on there at night when it’s quiet. That’s about it.”
Police were called twice about the incident at 2:25 p.m. May 13, with one caller reporting a driver going east on the trail and another saying the car was parked and unoccupied, said Officer Jessica Alvarez, a Chicago Police spokeswoman.
No reports were created, Alvarez said.
