CHICAGO — A 67-year-old man shot another man who was beating and robbing him Tuesday in Avondale, police said.

At 3:30 p.m., the older man was unloading a car in the back of a business in the 2800 block of West Belmont Avenue when a younger man came up to him. The younger man, who was 20-30 years old, hit the older man in his face and head and stole from him, police said.

The 67-year-old took out a gun and fired at the younger man, hitting him in his lower back, police said.

The older man, who had bruising and swelling to his head, and the younger man were taken to Illinois Masonic Hospital. Their conditions were not available but they were listed as “stable,” police said.

An investigation was ongoing.
