CHICAGO — Police are questioning a 16-year-old girl who gave birth to a baby found abandoned Tuesday in Hermosa.
The baby was found about 4 p.m. on top of a garbage can in an alley near the firehouse at 1747 N. Pulaski Road, said Fire Department spokesman Larry Merritt. Someone passing by saw the infant and took him to the fire station.
The baby was treated and hospitalized, Merritt said. His condition was originally listed as “very critical,” but he has improved, Fire Department officials said in a tweet.
A 16-year-old girl claimed to be the mother of the baby and detectives confirmed she gave birth to the boy on Wednesday night, said police spokesman Anthony Guglielmi in a tweet. The girl and the baby’s father were being questioned by officers.
