THE LOOP — A man was shot to death early Friday in the Loop, allegedly while trying to rob a man with a concealed carry permit, police said.

At 3:15 a.m., a 41-year-old man was driving his BMW in the first block of East Ida B. Wells Drive when a 22-year-old man in a Volkswagon rear-ended him, the older man told investigators, according to police. The two stopped their cars and the older man got out to see the damage.

The older man went back to his car to get his cellphone and the 22-year-old walked up to him with a handgun, police said. The 22-year-old demanded the older man turn over his car keys and pushed him into the car.

Both men were inside the car and the older man got his handgun from the car and shot the 22-year-old in his head, police said. The older man had a concealed carry license.

The 22-year-old man was taken to Stroger Hospital, where he was pronounced dead, police said. His identity has not yet been released by the Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office.

The 41-year-old man was being questioned by police and an investigation was ongoing.
