EDGEWATER — As the dust settles from Chicago’s contentious mayoral race, Edgewater residents can turn their eyes to a much cuter mayoral election: The Edgewater Chamber of Commerce is holding an election for Pet Mayor of Edgewater.

Owners have until Friday to submit their pet candidates. To participate, prospective pet candidates must create a campaign slogan and attend at least four campaign events.

The chamber will select up to six finalists from the submissions. Owners will be contacted no later than May 10 if their pet has been selected.

Campaign events will take place at Uncommon Ground, Chicago Mosaic School, Bark Bark Club, the Bands On Broadway festival, Edgewater’s Farmers Market and EdgeFest.

Katrina Balog, executive director of the Edgewater Chamber of Commerce, said the event is all about branding Edgewater as “the most pet-friendly neighborhood in Chicago.”

She said the Pet Mayor will be expected to help with social media marketing campaigns and to make regular appearances during the Pet Mayor’s one-year term.

Throughout the campaign, votes will cost $1 and the proceeds will go to Care For Real, an Edgewater-based nonprofit that provides food, clothing and support to those in need.

The chamber has already received dozens of entries and some charming campaign slogans, Balog said.

The campaign will culminate at this year’s EdgeFest, where the Pet Mayor will be announced and lead a parade of pets through Edgewater.
