LOGAN SQUARE — Some 20 fans of the TV show “Broad City” got to watch the series finale with Lincoln himself.
Hannibal Buress, who plays Ilana’s flame on the Comedy Central show, made a surprise appearance at Ampersand Cowork’s watch party Thursday, delighting a small group of fans.
Buress RSVP’d to the event online about an hour and a half before it was supposed to start, according to Mary Nisi, who runs the coworking space with her husband, John Pirnat.
“He RSVP’d and we were like this has to be someone f****** with us,” Nisi said.
But Buress’ tweet lended some credibility to the possibility that he might actually show up.
“Chicago tonight. @broadcity finale party. This is not my party. I just found it on eventbrite. #BroadCityFinale,” the tweet read with a link to the Ampersand event.
Apparently, Buress was searching for local watch parties online when he came across the one at Ampersand, according to Nisi. Buress’ team didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment.
Whatever the reason, everyone at Ampersand was “super psyched” to see Buress, Nisi said.
One guy who had traveled all the way from Louisiana to attend the watch party was stunned when Buress walked through the door.
“I was like this doesn’t happen at all chicago parties,” Nisi said.
According to Nisi, Buress stayed for the full episode and hung around afterwards to take photos with fans before eventually getting picked up by his uncle.
This isn’t the first time Buress, who lives in Chicago and is originally from the West Side’s Austin neighborhood, has crashed a small gathering. The now-famous actor has been known to do open-mic nights at Cole’s (also in Logan Square) and the Paper Machete at the Green Mill.
“Broad City” aired its series finale Thursday after five seasons.
