CHICAGO — A 5-year-old girl died in a fire early Friday in Englewood, officials said.

The fire broke out inside a home about 7 a.m. in the 5800 block of South May Street, said Larry Merritt, a Chicago Fire Department spokesman.

Emergency workers got to the home and found the girl’s family trying to get inside the home to find her, Merritt said. Firemen kept the family from getting inside and did their own search, eventually finding the young girl badly burned on a bunk bed in the home.

The fire was put out about 7:30 a.m. No other people were hospitalized.

What caused the fire was still being determined.
