CHICAGO — A 17-year-old has been charged in the fatal shooting of a Northside College Prep student Monday in Old Irving Park.

The teen, who was unnamed because he is a minor, was arrested Wednesday, police said. He was charged with first-degree murder and was expected to appear in Bond Court on Thursday.

At 5:36 p.m. Monday, the victim, Emanuel Gallegos, was a passenger in a car going west in the 4400 block of West Addison Street when several people on the street shouted gang slogans at the people in the car, officials said. One of the people in the street fired a gun at the car.

The teen was hit in his neck and he was taken to Illinois Masonic Hospital in critical condition, police said. Gallegos, of the 5300 block of West Drummond Place, was pronounced dead at 6:25 p.m., according to the Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office.

Gallegos was one of the “most loving and heartwarming kids” and was a Northside College Prep student who had planned to go to college, wrote his family friend, Martin Guzman, in a post on GoFundMe. Guzman started the GoFundMe campaign to raise money for a reward and to pay for Gallegos’ funeral expenses.

“Emanuel was one of the most loving and heartwarming kids I have ever known,” Guzman wrote. “This gunman took a beautiful life, a life full of many great things that the future hold[s] for him and others, a life who was beginning to flourish thanks to the up-growing of his family, a life that was here to help others, a life that will not be due to this coward gunman.”

The GoFundMe raised more than $23,000 in less than one day.
