CHICAGO — Aldermanic candidates in the 35th, 33rd and 39th wards will talk gentrification and housing issues at an upcoming forum in Albany Park.
The Autonomous Tenants Union (ATU) is hosting the forum, set for 4-6 p.m. Feb. 9 at Christ Lutheran Church, 3253 W. Wilson Ave.
The discussion will revolve around housing and gentrification issues in Albany Park and surrounding communities, according to the ATU. Spanish interpretation will be provided.
From the 33rd Ward, which includes parts of Avondale, Albany Park, Irving Park and Ravenswood Manor, candidates Rossana Rodriguez and Katie Sieracki are both scheduled to attend. Incumbent Ald. Deb Mell, who has held the seat since 2013, won’t be in attendance, according to the ATU.
Both 35th Ward candidates — incumbent Ald. Carlos Ramirez-Rosa and challenger Amanda Yu Dieterich — are scheduled to attend. Ramirez-Rosa has held the seat since 2015. The 35th Ward includes parts of Logan Square, Avondale, Irving Park, Albany Park and Hermosa.
As for the 39th Ward, two of the four candidates in the race, Casey Smagala and Robert Murphy, are both scheduled to attend. The other two — Samantha “Sam” Nugent and Joe Duplechin — won’t be in attendance. Find out more on each of the candidates here.
After serving as 39th Ward alderman for 24 years, Margaret Laurino, 66, announced in August she wasn’t going to seek reelection.
The 39th Ward includes parts of Albany Park, North Park, Mayfair, Sauganash, Edgebrook, Gladstone Park and Forest Glen.
Lynda Lopez, who writes about gentrification for Streetsblog Chicago, is slated to moderate the forum.
